Birthdays

When I was a little girl, my birthday was always a big thing in my family. Every morning, my mom would put a balloon right in front of my door, so when I opened it, "Happy Birthday" was the first thing I would see. She continued this even as I grew older. When I went to college, that balloon was always delivered to my first class of the morning. When I moved out, there it was as soon as I walked into their house that day. For the first time though ever, I know I wont be seeing that big balloon on the day of my birthday. Times change, life changes.

No, my mother has not passed away, but some times distance, it's just too much. This really got me thinking though about how much life really does change. As you grow up, get older, and eventually start a family of your own. Now I havent started my own family yet, but it all reminds me how precious mine really is. I know how much I think of them and miss them, but not seeing them on this day, really makes me think of how much they are always there. They were always so excited to celebrate the day they brought me into this world. It was the one day that we remembered that we ARE a family. No matter what we went through or the problems that we dealt with, we are blood. We are held together through a line of red.

As this birthday comes in a couple days, in the back of my head, I will remember that big "Happy Birthday" balloon. No matter how far my family is, I will remember all the things that keep us together.
