Valentine's Day, Friend of Foe?

Right after the new year begins, stores all begin to puke red. Filling shelves upon shelves with cards and candy and cute little teddy bears, all reminding us that Valentine's Day will soon be here. But is this one day set aside really for love, or has it been taken from its origin and turned into nothing more that a "hallmark holiday?" One theory on the creation of Valentine's day talks about St. Valentine was a man who defied the Roman emperor so young men and women could be married. This man died for people who were in love. If that is true, then there were no fancy candles, no chocolate or flowers. There was a funeral, not happiness and laughter. Another theory is that the Romans celebrated this day in the middle of February because is was the beginning of spring. There was a feast and celebration, but nothing that deemed this "the day for love." As time evolved though, these stories, as well as many others were turned and twisted into what we know Valentine's Day to be now. Why? Who says that love has to be put out there for all to see on one special day? I firmly believe in love, but that doesn't mean that I only want to celebrate one day. Myself personally dislike the idea of celebrating on this day. People have turned and twisted this day to be almost a requirement, but why? So I ask, is Valentine's Day a friend, or throughout time has it been turned into a day that some people use as a make or break in a relationship?

Valentines Day does not hold any special significance for me. I go out for movies, drives, restaurants and shopping with my guy every other day. I get gifts too at least twice a month. We love each other a lot and there is that warmth and love in our relationship that everyday is a Valentines Day for us. So i don't think that 'the day of love' day is needed for me. Couples who are not as lucky as us are welcome to celebrate and show their love and appreciation on the Valentines Day.
